¿What is Medicare?

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65+ and certain individuals with disabilities or specific conditions. It’s organized into parts:

Medicare Part A (Hospital)

Coverage for inpatient hospital stays and short-term skilled nursing after a qualifying stay. Includes limited home health services and hospice for end-of-life care. Designed to help with room, board, and medically necessary inpatient services. Works together with other parts of Medicare depending on your path

Cost: Many beneficiaries pay $0 premium with enough work credits; deductible and coinsurance per benefit period apply (amounts set annually).

Medicare Part A (Hospital)

Medicare Part B (Medical)

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, labs, imaging, and preventive services. Includes durable medical equipment and some home health services. Typically pairs with Part A as “Original Medicare.” You can add Part D and/or Medigap for fuller protection.

Cost: Monthly premium set annually (income adjustments may apply) + annual deductible; generally 20% coinsurance for most services after the deductible.

Medicare Part B (Medical)

Medicare Part C
(Medicare Advantage)

All-in-one private plans that provide Part A and Part B benefits through a network. Many plans bundle drug coverage and may offer extras like dental, vision, hearing, OTC, transportation, and fitness. You keep Medicare rights while receiving care through the plan’s rules. Availability and benefits vary by ZIP code and carrier.

Cost: Monthly premium varies by plan and county (many are $0 premium); copays/coinsurance and a yearly maximum out-of-pocket (MOOP) apply.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Medicare Part D
(Prescription Drugs)

Covers outpatient prescription medications through stand-alone drug plans or Advantage plans that include drug coverage. Plans differ in formularies, tiers, and preferred pharmacies. We check your meds to estimate total annual costs and fit. Enrolling when first eligible helps you avoid penalties.

Cost: Monthly premium varies by plan; may include a deductible and copays/coinsurance based on drug tier; late-enrollment penalty can apply if you delay.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drugs)

Medigap (Medicare Supplement)

Private policies that work with Original Medicare to help pay deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Standardized plan letters (like G or N) offer predictable costs and broad provider choice. You can see any doctor who accepts Medicare without network referrals. Pair with a separate Part D plan for prescriptions.

Cost: Monthly premium varies by plan letter, age/rating method, and state; you still pay the Part B premium; prescription drugs not included in Medigap.
